Coronada lives with her 34 year old son, Elmer, who works at a mechanic's shop to provide for their household and support his mother. In the past, Coronada used to sell quesadillas to sustain her family, but due to her age and health issues, she is no longer able to work. Now, she dedicates her time to caring for her son.
Coronada's house is in poor condition. The roof has leaks, and the house, built about 30 years ago, is showing significant wear and tear. Her greatest fear is that an earthquake could cause the house to collapse while she is inside, as she is unable to run to safety, Coronada is overjoyed about the new house, knowing that it will change their lives. She feels relieved to have a safe place to live and is happy that her son will inherit a secure home where he can one day start his own family.
