Silvia usually works as a maid in private homes, but when there are no other jobs available, she prepares and sells traditional Salvadoran food. She became a single mother five years ago after her husband passed away. Silvia lives with her 14-year-old son, Jefferson, who was at school at the time of the interview. She has been waiting for a long time to find a better place to live, as her current house is in poor condition, particularly the walls, which are made of mud. Silvia moved to this house 11 years ago.
